Road cycling routes in Girona from Can Freu
Climbs in Les Guilleries and Montseny, straight from the door.
In short
From Can Freu Cycling House, in Vilobí d’Onyar (La Selva), road routes head into Les Guilleries and Montseny. Three classics: Sant Hilari Sacalm (74.55 km, 1,481 m of climbing), the Les Guilleries loop (144.32 km, 1,600 m of climbing) and the Turó de l’Home (109.26 km, 3,066 m of climbing, very hard). The best season is September to June.
Why here
Mountain roads on the doorstep.
Girona is one of the favourite training bases of professional cyclists. From La Selva you reach the mountain roads of Les Guilleries and Montseny in a few kilometres: long climbs, forests and little traffic.
At Can Freu there is no need to drive: routes start from the door, and the 8-seat support van with bike trailer can follow the group.
The routes
Three road routes from Can Freu.
Sant Hilari Sacalm · 74.55 km · 1,481 m of climbing
The signature ride. Up into Les Guilleries to Sant Hilari Sacalm, at almost 1,000 m, through forests and springs. Demanding but doable for fit groups.
Les Guilleries loop · 144.32 km · 1,600 m of climbing
A long day on the roads of Les Guilleries, for riders who want real mileage.
Can Freu · Turó de l’Home · Can Freu · 109.26 km · 3,066 m of climbing
The queen stage, very hard: up to the Turó de l’Home, one of the highest summits in Montseny, and back to Can Freu.
Tips
Before you ride.
- When to go: September to June. In summer, start very early.
- Carry enough water and food: mountain routes have long stretches without villages.
- Load the track onto your GPS or phone before leaving.
- Back at the house: workshop, bike wash and secure bike storage at Can Freu.
